Author's Summary: 'And this, Jamie, is an oyster.' ‘You’ll not fool me, Doctor. That’s a rock, and I’m not eating it.’ The Second Doctor introduces Jamie to French cuisine. Their waiter, Guillaume, may never be the same again.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon
Recced because: Fic for the Second Doctor's era is regrettably rare, so any and all gems like this one should be savoured! The author makes a fine French restaurant seem as bizarre and unfathomable to our heroes as any alien planet - hilarity results, of course, but there's a really lovely thread of characterisation running throughout the story. uktechgirl writes both characters flawlessly, and the result is an extremely entertaining read!
C’est typique, murmured Guillaume, before raising his chin aloft. Philippe had abandoned him to his task, but he would not falter. He would execute a service for these lunatics so polished that their own roughness might become apparent even to them: would offer them food so fine they would be ashamed to have even dared enter. Monsieur Escoffier was no longer marshalling his beloved restaurant, it was true, but Guillaume would uphold the master’s impeccable standards. It was nothing less than his duty as a Frenchman.
He glided into position, and drew out the nearest chair for the skirted gentleman. Realising after a pause that there was some difficulty, he lowered his chin a fraction, to find the skirted gentleman looking at him in great puzzlement.
‘If yon laddie’s having that chair, Doctor, where am I to sit?’
Guillaume glanced at the clock, and decided that perhaps he would have that cognac a little earlier than planned.
