Rec: Closed Circle by Calapine

Story: Closed Circle
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: A junkyard and a goodbye and everything starts again.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: none
Word Count: 1,300 words

Recced because: Beautiful and heartbreaking, this is a tremendous story, and not at all crackfic as the pairing might suggest. Rose is an old woman, now, and one who has always loved and been loved by the Doctor; she returns to him, at the beginning, and we get a fascinating look at the circularity of time, and the way endings can be a beginning too. Careful, gentle storytelling and lyrical writing are the icing on the cake; she is old and she has always been in love, Rose reflects, a great premise with top-notch execution.

Rec: The Universe in Gallifreyan by northernMagic

Story: The Universe in Gallifreyan
Author: northernMagic
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1056
Author's Summary: a melody of cyclic harmonies and undulating words and an aeolian voice that whispered of the North-
(Not quite what she thought the writing on the sticky notes would sound like, but it's good enough for Rose.)
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: I have trouble describing this fic, other than to say it's absolutely beautiful. The author does an incredible job describing what spoken Gallifreyan might sound like, using language that is vivid yet precise, including quite a few references to advanced mathematical and musical theory. Instead of becoming bogged down in terminology, though, it's sad, and evocative, and poignant. Plus, the English translation of the poem the Doctor is reciting is just gorgeous; simple and moving.

rec: expectation and maximization, by eve11

Story: Expectation and Maximization
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2979
Author's Summary: "Rose Tyler, you've faced clockwork droids, Slitheen and Cybermen, not to mention five different types of zombies and a megalomaniacal nightmare better known as the Emperor of the Daleks, and you're telling me you're afraid of some maths?"
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), Rose Tyler
Warnings: None. Unless you fear math.

Recced because: I love the few stories that actually try to get inside the Doctor's understanding of time and probabilities, and this one finds a wonderful visual metaphor for how he always seemingly knows what to do and when.
