rec: in a dim light, by Branwyn

Story: in a dim light
Author: Branwyn
Rating: general
Word Count: 799
Author's Summary: Romana is a slave of the Daleks, and the Doctor is a nightmare incarnate.
Characters/Pairings: Four, Romana
Warnings: none.

Recced because:
Another character study, also in the context of a confinement (get the feeling I have a soft spot for these?).  I love how the author captures that way Four and Romana have of conversing in calm, measured tones -- that lightness in the dialogue, no matter what the situation. It’s that British impassiveness, that stiff upper lip carried to the nth degree, that just makes the emotion and the connection come through all the more, and the effect is heartrending. (Note: I only just discovered before posting that this is based on a Big Finish audio, The Apocalypse Element. It’s fascinating and quite readable without knowing that, though.)

Rec: Donna: the Beta Reader by Nostalgia

Story: Donna: the Beta Reader
Author: Nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1387
Author's Summary: In which the Doctor writes some fanfic and Donna… is Donna.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, the Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Language

Recced because: Every writer should consult a beta reader. But when an innocent request for a beta becomes a shipwar, the Doctor thinks twice about sharing his Angel fanfic with Donna. This concise, fantastic bit of humor is exactly the kind of fiction that I like to read.

The Doctor blushed. "Neither of them are me! I don't write that sort of fanfic! I write intelligent, thoughtful prose which is, for your information, very well received on the internet."
can't sleep! ten will eat me!, don't look back, like fire and ice and rage

REC: The Gap Between Womb and Tomb

Story: The Gap Between Womb and Tomb
Author: Kalima
Rating: either All Ages or Teen
Word Count: 2443
Author's summary: He'll build a bridge if he has to. The Tenth Doctor wants what he wants and he's figured out a way to get it. Problem is, it's not exactly ethical. And worse, it doesn't work.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan, Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Romana I, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: disturbing imagery

Recced because: The Tenth Doctor used to scare me. And I mean really scare me. He was mad and bad and dangerous to know. I've been warming up to him a bit in S4, but stories like this remind me exactly why he used to scare the shit out of me.

This story is tense and horrifying and very, very good.
