Story: Silence
Author: Glinda
Rating: Teen
Word count: 668
Author's summary: She lets her in, makes her tea, and finds some gin to lace it with, without a word.
Characters/pairings: Iris Wildthyme/Izzy Sinclair
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a beautiful Iris piece, which is enough to make it noteworthy. What's really unusual about Silence, however, is that it isn't comedy. Iris Wildthyme, the most irrepressible character ever to drive a double-decker bus and hit on every incarnation of the Doctor ever to cross her path, is pretty much made for comedy. That's what makes this fic so heart-stopping: We never expected to see Iris like this, and we never wanted to see Iris like this. Because this is Iris immediately after the Doctor has pressed the switch, and there aren't many fics out there that can make the Time War this interesting to me, or so real. Add to that a beautifully rendered Iris/Izzy relationship, and you've got a winner.

Story:  Valiant Tales
Author:  lindenharp
Rating:  All
Word Count: 100
Author's Summary: A series of drabbles about the people who lived, worked, and suffered on the Valiant during the Year That Never Was.
Characters: vary
Warnings: none

I can't believe these haven't been recommended before now!  lindenharp is writing a series of drabbles based upon people who were on the Valiant during the year between "Sound of Drums" and "Last of the Time Lords."  Each is only 100 words, but they pack a wallop.

Here's the first one, "The Accountant's Tale":

I was an accountant in the USAF Quartermaster Corps until the new regime drafted me. When rocket factories need steel, I decide which mills must overproduce; which workers are transferred across the world.

My ancestors were Crow Indians: nomadic warriors. Their wartime triumph was counting coup: touching an armed foe with a stick, leaving him alive but humiliated.

I manage small deceptions. Redirected shipments of rice. Disappearing truckloads of blankets. Guards’ medicine going to an orphanage. If discovered, I'll be guest star on “Morning Execution”. Until then, I honor my ancestors, counting coup on the Enemy of the World.

Story: Bright Young Thing
Author: livii
Rating: All ages
Word count: 1,243
Author's summary: She traces a pattern in the slushy ice: a woman, weeping. Susan, and the time vortex.
Characters/pairings: Susan/Ace, Susan/Rose, One
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's amazing to me that a character who left the show in 1964 seems to become increasingly more fertile ground for fic, rather than less, as the show evolves. This fic packs a lot into a small space by twining several eras' strands around each other: a look at the Doctor's relationship with Susan, and what drove him from Gallifrey; the fallout for Susan herself; and a compelling combination of ideas from S3 with canon from earlier eras, especially as achieved by combining Susan with later characters. Mostly, though, it's just beautifully sad and one of my favorite characterizations of Susan. The juxtaposition of her strength and frailty brings her to life.
