Summary: War, in fragments: Gallifrey's two greatest defenders.
Recced because: This fic imagines the Master and Leela as warriors of Gallifrey, bound together by their determination to protect their home. They are not friends, but comrades-in-arms, sharing something deeper than trust in the cataclysm of the Time War. The prose is sparse and evocative, and the relationship the two share is uncertain and oddly beautiful. Leela is proud and brave; the Master is proud and almost brave. But the ending shows where they differ.
She cannot feel her legs: her legs, her heart, her head.
"Hold on," he whispers, his breath sweeping across her like the exhalation of the gods, come to take her home to a well-deserved rest.
When she wakes she finds herself back on Gallifrey, and feels shame at her half-dead desire to see her ancestors again.
He leans forward upon seeing her awaken; he is perched awkwardly on a chair and appears to have been sitting there for quite some time. He clears his throat. "The bomb went off. That battle is over."
"Victory is ours," she says, and closes her eyes again. She can still hear him breathing; all the gods' creatures made of flesh and noisy air. She finds this thought reassuring.
